How to Reset the TPMS Light After New Tyres
After a tyre change or pressure adjustment, the tyre pressure warning light sometimes stays on until the system is reset. How you do it depends on the type of TPMS your car has.
Indirect TPMS
This system uses the ABS wheel speed sensors and has no sensor in the wheel. After setting the correct pressures, you normally reset it using a button in the glovebox, a menu on the dash or the infotainment screen. The car then relearns over a short drive.
Direct TPMS
Direct systems have a sensor in each wheel. Many relearn automatically after you drive for a few minutes at moderate speed. Others need a scan tool to register the sensors, particularly if new sensors have been fitted or wheels have been swapped around.
Basic steps
- Set all four tyres to the pressure on the door-frame sticker, cold.
- Look in the handbook for the reset button or menu option.
- Hold the button or run the reset and drive for about 10 to 20 minutes.
If the light stays on
This usually means a sensor battery is flat, a sensor is faulty or a tyre has a slow leak. See why the TPMS light comes on and whether sensors need replacing with new tyres. Our TPMS valve and sensor service comes to you.
